A Hike Toward Dainichidaira — Still a Beginner!

Today the temperature finally felt a little more like autumn.
On a day like this, my first thought was, “Perfect weather for a hike!”

So off I went to Shomyo Falls.

I parked at the Shomyo Falls parking area and walked a few minutes toward the waterfall. That’s where the trailhead for Mt. Dainichi begins.

I have been a “mountain girl” for less than a year, so when I saw the sign saying it would take 5 hours and 40 minutes to reach Mt. Dainichi, I didn’t really think much about it.

I just thought, “Well, I’ll go as far as I can.”

Big mistake!

Of course, I knew I wasn’t going to walk all the way to the top. But even so, the trail was much tougher than I expected. There were steep rocky sections, tree roots, narrow paths, and one climb after another.

After about an hour and a half, my legs finally said, “That’s enough for today.” I sat down on a big rock and let out a long sigh. Just then, a hiker coming down the mountain said to me,

“From here, it gets even harder.”

Even harder?

I tried to keep going for another ten minutes, but the trail just kept twisting upward, with no end in sight. So I decided, “Okay, this is it for today,” and turned around.

There was one more thing that made the hike feel a little more serious — bears.

Near the trailhead, there was a large “Beware of Bears” sign, and even a device playing high-frequency sounds that bears are supposed to dislike. There was also a notice saying that a person had recently been injured by a bear in the area. It was a good reminder that while the mountains are beautiful, they are also truly wild places.

I didn’t make it to Dainichidaira this time.

Still, looking across at the steep green mountains and deep valleys, I couldn’t help thinking, “Next time, maybe I can go a little farther.”

So my next goal is simple: Make it to Dainichidaira!

My life as a mountain girl has only just begun.
Little by little, I hope to build up my strength and experience — and one day report back, “I made it!”
